Marcelle Shehwaro

About

Marcelle Shehwaro is an activist and writer from Aleppo, Syria. In 2015, her online series “Dispatches from Syria,” describing her life in Aleppo, won a 2015 Online Journalism Award in the category of Online Commentary. She was the co-founder and CEO of Kesh Malek, a civil society organization in Syria focused on human rights, transitional justice, and education. Marcelle hold a bachelor’s degree in dentistry. She studied international relations in Syria and has a master’s degree in Human Rights and Cultural Diversity from the University of Essex, UK. She is currently an MFA student in nonfiction writing at Columbia University.
