Adi magazine is inviting applications for an editor-in-chief to lead production and development of the online literary journal of global politics.

This is a part-time, remote position. See below for further information about Adi and the role.

ABOUT ADI:

Founded in 2019 and named after a Tamil word with three meanings—protest, intervention, and violence—the magazine is rooted in the lived experience of politics and policy, with a focus on the Global South and speaking from the margins. Adi publishes essays, reportage, fiction, poetry, and original art and illustration, with a particular interest in genre-bending and interdisciplinary works.

Adi’s quarterly, online themed issues have explored borders and American exceptionalism, indigenous climate interventions, global notions of freedom, fiction after the Myanmar coup, state violence in South Asia, and more. We have featured, among many others, new work by Tracy K. Smith, Bhanu Kapil, Momtaza Mehri, Nadifa Mohamed, Rafia Zakaria, Anna Badkhen, and Michelle Garcia.

A project of the Politics of Sexual Violence Initiative at City College, New York, Adi’s founding team includes outgoing editor Meara Sharma, Nimmi Gowrinathan (scholar and author of Radicalizing Her) and Michael Archer (co-founder, Guernica magazine).

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Leading production of quarterly issues, which involves conceptualizing themes, commissioning work from writers and artists, editing pieces to a high standard, and managing production workflow, including translation, fact-checking, illustration, copyediting, and working with the website/webmaster
  • Overseeing and collaborating with a small team that includes a managing editor, senior editor, and contributing editor
  • Implementing a strategy for publishing regular dispatches, reviews, interviews, and other short pieces in between primary issues
  • Working with Publisher and Board to oversee social media, publicity, and events and help build the readership, capacity, and scope of the magazine

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates should have significant experience commissioning and editing literary journalism and creative writing, as well as a clear interest in global policy, subaltern political movements, and centering marginal voices and experiences. Prior experience leading editorial projects and managing teams and workflows will be looked upon favorably. Rigorous attention to detail, organizational finesse, and self-motivation are essential.

Adi is a young publication and so the new editor-in-chief will play a large part in shaping the growth and future trajectory of the magazine. This is a position with significant room for evolution and expansion. We want to hear from candidates whose sensibilities resonate with Adi’s mission and archive, and who have a clear vision for how to take the magazine forward.

COMMITMENT AND COMPENSATION:

This is a part-time role that averages 2 days per week, though the time commitment ebbs and flows with the magazine’s production cycle. The role would commence in late August.

The editor-in-chief will be an independent contractor, paid an hourly rate (ranging between $50 and $60) commensurate with experience.

TO APPLY, PLEASE PROVIDE:

  • a cover letter (max 500 words) that outlines your experience and vision for this role; for example, ideas for issue themes and contributors
  • a one-page CV
  • links to 3-5 relevant work samples, including editorial projects and written work

Send these elements in a single pdf to admin@adimagazine.com with the subject line EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ROLE.

Applications close on July 15th at 5pm EST, though we urge interested candidates to apply as soon as possible. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for an interview.
